REDBIRD
A beautiful redbird by
my window
He looked at me and said how do you do?
I nodded back and said
Doing what I’m supposed to do
He turned away out of my sight.
Goodbye, goodbye, my little robin
Don’t stay too long please come again
I’d like to sit on the branch with you a while
My little friend
And ask you what makes you what you are.
Three months went by no little robin
Though I listened for his call most everyday
I saw gray birds and brown birds
Who ate my bread and ran away
But none could tell me where my robin lay.
Come back come back my little robin
Don’t leave me here all alone
Though cheerful I get lonely in the morning
Just like the nights
And I need someone to share a warm hello.
In six months the leaves fell off the trees
And cold winds blew the birds away
Hopelessly I looked outside my window
For I knew
No little redbird would come to play
Come back come back my little robin
I need you more now than before
Please take me up into the air with you
When you fly
Let me taste the clouds and feel the sky
Sometimes I’d think I’d see the robin
Not outside me but inside me in my dreams
And I’d hear him crying softly
My lady won’t you come outside and play
And I’d know he knows exactly what he’s saying.
So one morning instead of sitting at my table
I went outside and climbed on to a tree
While sitting I could breathe I could sing I could feel
I looked over and guess who was sitting next to me?
Well hello, hello, my little robin
I see you’ve come back for a while
Where did you go, why did you leave me
He turned and said
My lady, I never went, I’ve only been waiting.

SMILE
I look around me what
do I see
Many faces much disease
A million daydreams lost in the city
But all I can do now is smile
I look above me what do I hear
Rain in the sky crickets in the breeze
A buzzing wakes me; God speaks clearly
But all I can do now is smile
All I can do now is smile
This city life may not suit me
But it don’t bother me
I’m learning how to live in the city
And someday I’ll be free
Someday I’ll be free.
I’m going down to that river in the earth
I’m heading up to that mountain in the sky
There ain’t nothing gonna stop this girl
From getting high
Cause all I can do now is smile
All I can do now is smile.

THE KISS
Many years gone there
was a man who lived inside a box
He had no love to fill him up
He was as still as the summer’s eve
Everyday he lived his life in peace.
I met this man by coincidence we did not plan to meet
He gave me many warnings, he said don’t fall in love with me
Many women have I had and they have all agreed
That none can light the candle that my darkness needs.
Perhaps in another place or time lovers we could be
But too many women have run away from me
I’ve lost my desire for pursuit alone now I must dwell
But do not leave without a touch your body suits me well.
In darkness I came toward him his shadow I did see
Below he eyes I found his lips staring into me
His arms went around and around and around
They never seemed to end
I heard him whisper in my ear let this kiss begin
Well I’ve seen the rain I’ve smelled the fire
Of burning ash and leaves
The summers pass the birds fly south
And winters never cease
But never in my life have I seen such a man
Such a man as this
Take all of the love he had inside and give it in a kiss
Take all of the love he had inside and give it in a kiss.

RUB MY FEET BLUES
Oh honey won’t you rub
my feet
Be my lamb I’ll be your sheep
I feel so lonely I feel so blue
I’m just waiting for you to take off my shoe
Oh honey won’t you stoke my head
Come on now make me forget
The sun’s gone down and folks are going to bed
Oh honey won’t you stroke my head
Sitting here lonely I’m so blue
Writing a love song just for you
But what I sing you won’t hear
Cause where you’re living ain’t nowhere near
Oh honey won’t you toss my greens
Shake me up and make me scream
All my juice is turning into cream
Oh honey won’t you make me scream
Oh honey won’t you pop my crick
My neck’s so sore from doing the splits
Like Jack Be Nimble I’ve been jumping too quick
I need a little action around my neck.
Sitting here lonely I’m so blue
I haven’t got my love to talk to
I can’t even telephone
The money for the stamps is just about gone.
Oh honey won’t you make me smile
Rub me and love me a little while
I feel so lonely I could lay down and die
Oh honey won’t you make me smile.
I feel so lonely I feel so blue
I’m just waiting for you to take off my shoe.
Oh honey won’t you rub my feet.

FOOL LIKE YOU
I get the
blues all the time
When you tell me that you won’t be mine
I get the blues all the time
When you tell me that you won’t be mine
It don’t matter what you’re doing
Who you’re seeing
If you don’t see me.
Well I’m sleeping the morning
And the coffee is black
But it won’t save me
Well I’m sleeping in the morning
And the coffee is black
But it won’t save me
I’m doing what I can
It don’t matter if it’s right or wrong.
If you pass me on the street
You’d better not turn around and see
Who’s walking behind you
If you pass me on the street
You better not turn around and catch
Who’s walking behind you
I just might take a sudden notion
Seize upon the moment
And surprise you.
I got a lot of love inside
But these blues have got me
Feeling like I’m dying
I got a lot of love inside
But these blues have got me
Feeling like I’m dying
Dying
And it’s a fool like you
That makes a lover like me
Stand up and cry them
I’m dying
Oh honey won’t you help me

SAN FRANCISCO IN MY
MIND
From the hotel window
Things don’t look the same as in
San Francisco
I don’t even see
How a little bird or tree
Could live out in that cold and snow
But in San Francisco
The sun can show its face
Most any time of year
You can feel its shiny eyes
Hide behind the foggy sky
You can even play outside all year.
Why am I so cold
Why don’t I go home
Am I waiting only for a tear to fall?
I’ve been thinking lately
About all the reasons why I left to
Come here.
Why I left the ones who love me
What I hope to do or become
Well you may smile but
I don’t think that I will cry
If you tell me San Francisco
Is my style
Now it’s turning nighttime
And the porters pull the curtains
In the window sills
It’s funny but it looks the same
In morning or in nighttime
The curtains only signify a change
Well I shall drink some coffee
And I shall play a tune
For soon the sun will shine
And I can sing this rhyme
I can still feel San Francisco in my mind.

JELLYROLLIN’
Jellyrollin’
I caught you rollin’
Right across your big white bed
‘Cept for sleepin’
You’ve been a keeping me
Right under your head I swear
Within your big white bed.
Celebratin’
Now you’ve been awaitin’
For the sunshine and happy days
You were hoping
How I’d be a slopin’
Slippin’ and slidin’ down your way
Hey, hey,
Down to where you lay
Contemplatin’
Now you’re hesitatin’
Cause you’re happy
And you don’t know why
You got your breathin’
Now you’ve got your feeling
Aren’t you satisfied
My my
Well I’m so satisfied.

HAMMER IN MY HEART
Sometimes I don’t want
to see you
I’m not to anyone but me
A hole in my room is all I need
The insides of guts is my peace
Please don’t force me to release
Well there’s a hammer in my heart
There’s a breath in there for me
I think I’ll hang on to the handle
Sail away on the beat.
Some folks say I’m lucky
To have his urge to feel
But when you lose it all in one shot
Pain is what you deal
Time is what you steal
Please don’t force me to heal
Some folks they got answers
Tell you burns take time to heal
But what they don’t comprehend
Is I’m hanging on my skin
Like torn sleeves you ain’t never gonna mend
Please don’t force me to bend

LOST IN THE TALK
BLUES
One minute he says
he’s happy
One minute he says he’s sad
One minute he thinks he’s lost in love
One minute he thinks he’s been had
He wants so much to have me stay
He’d like to be my man
A friend for a minute a lover for a night
Well who really cares if it’s lost in the talk
And I think we’d be a whole lot better
If we sat and talked of life
Love matters only when you’re in love
Or else talking about love will only
Bring you down
And that’s not why I’m here or why I stay around
We’re none of us meant to be sorry
We’re none of us meant to be blue
Don’t matter how much you’re hurting
You can come up too.
One minute you think you’re dying
One minute you see your way
It comes like a morning
After sleeping all night
So don’t fret don’t worry
Everything will be all right.

A SIMPLE STRING OF
WONDER
It’s so strange now to
be lonely
It’s too early to be blue
But on the floor I am lying
And not too sure if I can move
When there’s time who’s there to answer
Who’s smile said I want you
Just call me I’ll come over
Who said that’s all I must do?
It’s so strange this kind of worry
That too much joy may get you down.
Yesterday you sailed on courage
Today you’re crazy like a clown.
Oh this life’s a string of wonder
Knots that keep you safe from fear
Try to walk the line between them
You must untie all that’s dear.

TAKE WHAT IS YOURS
You say you’re going
away
You say you don’t love me no more
You say there’s no more to feel
Take what is yours and leave me to heal.
All that you wanted
All that you gave
It is not lost
It is not saved
All that you tried
And could not be
Leave to me for my memory.
I’m never sure how to talk to you
I’m never sure if I know the truth
I’m never sure if we ever felt
That the times we loved
Were real in themselves.

FOR LOVING EACH
OTHER
I can’t seem to get
enough of your love baby
No matter how I try
I can’t find the way
I can’t help but try to hold you baby
Even when you’re love won’t let you stay.
I can’t seem to find the love that I held
Deep I my heart, for you baby.
It was there until the worlds that we lived
Drove us apart
Oh baby, baby, baby I need your love
Help me get back to you.
In the nighttime how close we are
Wrapped inside arms we lie
But in the morning when we leave each other
I feel so empty inside
The more you give me the more I want you
Baby I want you
Help me get back to you.
Love like this could last forever
Love like this could go on and on
So let’s not let the things we want to be
Tell us we’re wrong
Oh baby, baby, baby, baby, baby
For loving each other
For needing each other
Oh baby I need you.

FRIEND FOR A WHILE
I don’t want just one
man
I don’t even want five
I want one man to take me as I am
And be my friend for a while
And be my friend for a while
Hours passed you stood alone
Angry at my error
You had figured I was yours
For all that you had suffered
For all that you had suffered.
Tomorrow comes and finds me here
In the same dilemma
Wrong or right won’t mark the line
Of where we start or finish
I don’t want just one man
I don’t even want five
I want one man to take me as I am
And be my friend for a while
And be my friend for a while
And be my friend forever.
